BOWEN RESEARCH

This therapy was developed in the 1950’s and 1960’s by Thomas Ambrose Bowen who had an apparent gift for ‘reading’ a body through his fingers and by visual observation. Since the documentation and teaching of his work around the world by Ozzie and Elaine Rentsch, and more recently by others, including Michael Nixon-Livy, published research has been directed to specific topics:

Tom Bowen

1. AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM

Research in the USA, 1997, by Dr Jo Anne Whitaker MD, showed that Bowen treatment affects the autonomic nervous system, as measured by heart rate variability and clinical assessment.

2. LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE

A study in the UK on the effect of Bowen treatment on lymphatic drainage was published by lymphoedema nurse Eilish Lund, in ‘Proof!’ (Winter 1998/99), and also in the British Lymphoedema Society Newsletter, Issue 24,1999.

3. ‘FROZEN’ SHOULDER

3.1 A research project on the effect of Bowen treatment on ‘frozen’ shoulder syndrome was carried out by Helen Kinnear and Julian Baker in the UK, 1998-2000. Results showed that Bowen significantly improved shoulder function through increasing the range of motion, and reducing pain. The range of motion of shoulder abduction was increased in 78% of treated patients compared with 22% of the placebo group, and the actual improvement was 40% in the treated group compared with 9% in the placebo group.

3.2 Further research to demonstrate the efficacy of the Bowen Technique in treating Frozen Shoulder was carried out with support from the Bowen Association UK. This is published in the journal 'Complementary Medicine in Alternative Therapies', December 2001.

4. FIBROMYALGIA

A pilot study on the effect of Bowen treatment fibromyalgia sufferers was carried out by Tim Willcocks in the UK, 1997-98. Four volunteers, all women between the ages of 39 and 52, having been diagnosed with fibromyalgia from 3 to 5 years, were given four treatments over a period of five weeks.

Initial symptoms included: pain all over, feeling of electric shocks, ‘clicky jaw’, vertigo, deafness, IBS, and loss of feeling in extremities.

Improvements were experienced by all four participants: walking and sleeping better, cessation of vertigo attacks, diminished electric shocks, neck pain eased, balance and hearing improved, infection lasting only half the anticipated duration, ‘calmer and more self-possessed’, ‘less exhaustion and feeling brighter’.

The changes were summed up in two comments: 1. "When you get used to so much pain, you forget what a relief this (ie. the treatment) can be", and 2. "Unbelievable!".

5. CEREBRAL PALSY

Ongoing research by Howard Plummer in Wales, since 1999 has targeted children with cerebral palsy, is producing encouraging results. Initial outcomes include:

Increased vocalisation; quieter, calmer behaviour; improved co-ordination/ concentration/comprehension; improvements in constipation and with scoliosis; head control and balance improved development of better eye contact.

Howard holds a free clinic every two weeks in Cardiff for children with cerebral palsy and related conditions.  Contacts for further information are: Tel. 02920-484683

6. MIGRAINE

The Bowen Technique National Migraine Research Programme was carried out in 2001 under the supervision and coordination of Nikke Arriff.

Of 39 participants who suffered from migraine attacks, 79.5% experienced a decrease in the frequency, severity, or both, of their migraines.
